Winter 2017 Capsule Wardrobe

I thought it was about time I gave a little insight into what’s actually in my wardrobe. At the moment it consists of 28 pieces, although that number fluctuates from season to season.

This current selection has been working for me since the start of December last year, and I feel confident that these pieces can see me through until the end of February, which is when I will start planning and shopping for my Spring wardrobe! How exciting!

Autumn and Winter are by far my favourite seasons, and this can make it very easy to get carried away when shopping and selecting my pieces. So, I like to ask myself a simple question whenever I’m about to make a purchase – Can I make at least 3 outfits using this piece with what I already own?

If the answer is yes, that piece comes home with me!

It may sound silly, but I’ve found this really works for me when shopping, and stops me making hasty decisions and ending up back at square one, with a closet full of unwearable and unwanted items.

So, here it is!winter-capsule-wardrobe-grey

*Not pictured – I don’t include workout clothes, work uniform or pyjamas in my capsule*

When I was pulling this capsule together, I had to take into consideration and plan for the festive period. As my usual every day style is very casual, I wanted to make sure I included a few pieces that could be dressed up for any parties and festivities, but could also work post Christmas and New Year.

I feel quite confident I achieved that! So far, so good anyway.

A little breakdown of what’s in my Winter Capsule Wardrobe:
I’ve provided links to everything I could find, in case something has caught your eye! 🙂

band tee/logo tee/striped top/cropped top

white blouse/flannel shirt/denim shirt/boho blouse

lightweight knits/chunky knit/statement jumper (on sale!)

slouchy knit/high neck knit (similar)/floral skirt/faux leather skirt(similar with elastic waist!!)

midi skirt (gold version)/boyfriend jeans (similar)/high waisted skinny jeans/joggers

basic dress/faux leather jacket (similar) (mine is primark!)/statement coat/smarter coat(similar)

studded boots/ankle boots/trainers/hi-tops

Hero pieces so far:

  • lightweight knits – I originally had this jumper in the pink, I loved it so much I went back and bought the cream version! They are the perfect soft and cosy material and perfect for styling with all trousers and skirts. I’ve been looking after them by washing them on a gentle wool cycle and I have to say so far I’m really impressed, there’s been no shrinking or misshaping that you sometimes find with cheaper knits. (I’ve noticed there’s now a beautiful khaki colour as well…can I fit another into my Spring capsule perhaps?)
  • joggers – I already raved about my new found love for joggers in my first Weekend in outfits post. They have been a welcome addition to my wardrobe and bonus! – they are really, really warm! For extra cold days I can simply wear a pair of tights underneath and I will be toasty warm all day 🙂
  • basic dress – If you’ve seen my post on the Winter 10×10 challenge, you’ll know how versatile I found this dress to be. In the end it featured in a grand total of 4 out of the 10 outfits, and made me fall in love with it all over again.
  • statement coat – I have always had plain coats in the past, black or grey usually. But as so many of my clothes are plain and almost exclusively monochromatic, I wanted to push myself to try something a bit different, and that came in the form of this coat. I love how it can transform a super simple outfit into something a little edgy and cool. Plus, it was on sale! Bargain!

So, there we have it! Just a little insight into what’s in my wardrobe, and the pieces I’ve been styling recently.

I’ll also be doing a wrap up post at the end of the season, to reflect on lessons learned during my winter capsule.

Feel free to drop a comment below, I’d love to hear from you! Have you got a capsule wardrobe?

  1. I ask myself the same question when shopping and it has been so helpful!!
Your winter wardrobe looks great! I’m going to have to start thinking about my autumn/winter wardrobe soon by I’m still just clinging onto summer for a little while longer! Hehe! 😉
